Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council have attached great importance to its prevention and control. On January 25, General Secretary Xi Jinping presided over the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee to re-study, re-deploy and re-mobilize the prevention, control and treatment of pneumonia infected by novel coronavirus. University leaders at all levels attached great importance to it and always followed the guideline that “the epidemic is an order, prevention & control is a responsibility”. However, in the face of tens of thousands of teachers and students in the university, it is inefficient to use traditional methods to check the health status of teachers and students and report the epidemic data. The thorough search of health information in a short time is particularly critical to the epidemic prevention and control, as a consequence, it is extremely urgent to provide information support for personal health reporting.

I. Agile development to achieve rapid iteration of faculty and student health reporting system

In order to resolutely prevent the further spread of the epidemic to the university, and to effectively collect and fully grasp geographic locations and health status of faculty and students, on January 23, 2020, the Networking and Computing Center tried to develop the process based on HUST’s online service hall process platform, take advantages of agile development and rapid iteration of the process platform to report and collect faculty and student health data. Afterwards, it took only 5 days and nights to complete high-intensity development of the health status reporting system for faculty, undergraduates and graduate students, i.e., the system was developed on January 28, 2020. At the same time, iterative upgrade of the system was and is rapidly realized based on the needs of epidemic prevention and control and according to the new requirements and new measures of relevant departments.

II. Data integration to provide big data support for epidemic prevention and control in HUST

On February 1, 2020, the Reporting, Query and Statistics System for Faculty and Student Health Status was launched based on the personal health data reported by faculty and students. Each department can query and export the data reported by its own faculty and students via the system to facilitate HUST leading group for COVID-19 prevention and control and various departments to timely and accurately grasp the health status of faculty and students. The system has the detailed body temperature reporting statistics and non-reporting list query functions. With the help of the system, each department of HUST can perform statistical analysis on the epidemic information in a timely and accurate manner, and fully grasp the health status of faculty and students of the department anytime and anywhere. At the same time, HUST office of leading group for epidemic prevention and control can screen and retrieve relevant information according to the needs of epidemic prevention and control, which effectively promotes the scientific decision-making, precise policy implementation and rapid response of epidemic prevention and control, and provides big data support to win the fight against the epidemic.

III. Complete coverage to make obvious achievements in personal health data collection

On the first day of launching the “HUST Faculty and Student Health Status Reporting System”, a total of 43,232 teachers and students reported their health status. As of April 8, 2020 when Wuhan lockdown was lifted, a total of 4.1 million valid records have been collected through the persistent efforts of “Daily Report” by all teachers and students; the reporting rates of faculty, graduate students and undergraduates reached 87.63%, 99.69%, and 100% respectively; the average reporting rate was as high as 95.6%. As of the end of 2020, a total of 6.93 million valid reporting records have been collected; the reporting rates of faculty, undergraduates, and graduate students were as high as 88.24%, 99.69%, and 100%, respectively; the average reporting rate was as high as 96.97%.

The system supports faculty and students to quickly report health status, historical travel records and other information through only a mobile phone, greatly improving the timeliness and accuracy of information reporting. It’s fair to say that the thorough search of health information in a short time has played a very important role in the epidemic prevention and control.
