From September 1 to 4, undergraduate freshmen 2021 and graduate freshmen 2021 were enrolled in Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST). The smart registration system which was jointly constructed by the Student Affairs Department, the Network & Informatization Office, and the Network and Computing Center was launched and applied to 2021 freshmen registration.
To provide a comfortable, efficient, and safe admission experience for 2021 freshmen, standardize the registration process, and improve management service efficiency, HUST decided to build a smart registration system for freshmen, which is an extended version of HUST's original digital registration system, and is able to seamlessly connect with the original one. The system has main functions of freshmen identity verification and registration, big data display, and real-time query of registration progress. After freshmen arrived at HUST, they should complete the registration at the entrance of their dormitories or at the registration sites of each school. The identity verification system would compare ID information and photos, admission data and photos, and on-site facial photos, i.e., the registration process would be completed automatically. It took less than 10s for this process, which greatly improved the freshman registration experience. A large display screen was set up in the centralized registration area, which displayed real-time registration rates of freshmen from different provinces in schools and departments, and freshmen's schools or departments, ages, birthplaces, birthdays, etc. At the same time, the screen also played the story of outstanding Party members, anti-fraud knowledge and promotion videos, which attracted many freshmen's attention. Head of each school and department could receive regular notifications on statistics of registration data at HUST's mobile portal, and could also inquire in real time to understand the registration dynamics, which greatly improved the efficiency of statistics.
Jing Zhemin, a 2021 undergraduate freshman of the School of Economics, said that with the face recognition and registration system, she felt the convenience in the era of artificial intelligence. She enjoyed direct registration by just face swiping, skipping a lot of complicated formalities. Combination of science and technology brings novel and convenient feeling to study and life.
Lei Haonan, a freshman counselor of the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, said that the new face recognition system was applied to the registration work, so that every freshman could experience the cutting-edge technology once again in his life. He also stated that this system was an excellent assistant for streamlining processes, improving efficiency, and obtaining and tracking registration progress timely. He is convinced that with the further improvement of the system, the digital campus can make every student enjoy our digital future.
It is learned that the time for this system construction is quite tight and urgent. With the support and cooperation of all schools and departments, esp. the Student Affairs Department, Network & Informatization Office, and Network and Computing Center, the system was successfully completed in time, including system development, equipment debugging, network coverage, and user training.
